Trinity Jewellery Crafts is a small jewelry-making business on the outskirts of Mathare Valley, one of Nairobi, Kenya’s oldest and largest slums. Your purchase guarantees food on the table for artisans, as well as shelter, clothing, and school for their children.Growing up severely impoverished in Nairobi, Joseph Muchina set out to reduce poverty through economic opportunity rather than handouts from government or charities. Together with two others from the Mathare Valley, Joseph trained as a jewelry artisan with the National Council of Churches in Kenya, and in 1984, founded a fair trade business to help so many in need. Employees are trained on the job, and in addition to their monthly income, jewelry makers at Trinity participate in a profit-sharing plan and 10% of their earnings are set aside each month in a pension plan. As director, Muchina finds inspiration for products in traditional African jewelry designs and incorporates beads from local family bead producers. New orders for their products means basic life needs can be met.
